In the price-sensitive agricultural market of Uganda, the adoption of sustainable, organic fertilizers has faced a significant barrier: cost. While organic solutions are vital for long-term soil health, previous attempts to introduce organo-mineral fertilizers have often been too expensive for local farmers to use effectively.
To bridge this gap, Grainpulse LTD - a leading Ugandan fertilizer producer and subsidiary of K+S has partnered with the Kampala-based startup Proteen. This collaborative pilot project, initiated and managed by RootCamp, aims to develop a commercially viable organo-mineral fertilizer tailored specifically for the Ugandan market.
The collaboration leverages Proteen's innovative approach to the circular economy. Founded in 2018, Proteen specializes in converting organic waste streams into high-quality fertilizer using Black Soldier Fly larvae.
By combining Proteen’s cost-effective organic base with the mineral expertise of Grainpulse and K+S, the partnership is creating a mixed organo-mineral product. This approach aimed to provide the nutrient efficiency of mineral fertilizers alongside the soil-building benefits of organic matter, all at a price point that allows for true market penetration.
During This 13-month pilot project (running from May 2024 to June 2025) the teams worked toward several critical milestones to ensure both agricultural and commercial success:
Product development: The creation of three distinct organo-mineral fertiliser products.
Economic viability: A report based on preliminary field trials to ensure the solution is affordable and sustainable.
Market Exploration: A comprehensive market report based on actual test sales to gauge local demand.
Agricultural Impact: A final yield report scientifically measuring the performance of the newly developed products in the field.
Based in Kampala, Uganda, Proteen is on a mission to revolutionize waste management and agricultural inputs. By utilizing insects to process organic waste, they create a closed-loop system that supports local farmers and reduces environmental impact. Their collaboration with industry leaders like Grainpulse and K+S underscores the power of Venture Clienting in bringing localized, high-tech biological solutions to a global industrial scale.
